Film Photography
I got into film photography because of a class I took in college. At the time my roommate and I shared a Pentax K1000, and having to share the camera made it difficult at the time to complete projects. But by now I’ve shot on a handful of different film cameras, including the very same K1000 I can call my own. You won’t find any shots from that class on this page, but what you will find is a variety of shots and styles that represent how my eye and art have evolved over time.
Sitting -
This was probably the first photo I took on film that I truly liked. It’s just a chair, but the colors looked right and the chair’s in focus. I’d only been shooting film for a week or two but because of this shot, Kodak’s Portra 800 became my favorite film to shoot on.
Barn -
There’s a little park next to a community farm in my hometown. Driving by there a few times a week in the middle of February I would often see this beautiful fog set in. After a few weeks of seeing this fog I took my camera with me on this drive and got this shot of a barn.
Guy Under Tree -
As the COVID Pandemic loomed on the horizon I entered a cherry blossom photography contest in Portland. I shot several rolls of film of the cherry blossoms but none of my other shots compared to this one. I just saw this guy tugging at the branches to get the blossoms to fall and I thought the falling blossoms looked cool. The shot doesn’t really capturing them in free-fall but having Portland’s Steel Bridge rising in the background on a beautiful early Spring day made for my favorite photo I’ve ever taken, at the time.
Watchtower -
Here, here is my all-time favorite photo I’ve ever taken. On an annual fishing/camping trip with my Dad to Astoria, I opted to bring my K1000 with me to take some photos. I got a lots of photos in the water near where we fished, but it was after fishing was done when we went deeper into Fort Stevens State Park that I got this photo during sunset. This observation tower is almost as far Northwest as you can go in the State of Oregon, and provides for an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River.
